Sibanye-Stillwater greenlights new copper and gold mines across two continents

Sibanye-Stillwater has given the go-ahead to two major mining projects---the Mt Lyell copper-gold operation in Tasmania, Australia, and the Burnstone gold project in South Africa. The dual approvals mark a strategic push into long-life assets, bolstered by a rally in commodity prices that has strengthened the company's financial position.

The Johannesburg-based miner has earmarked $7.5 million (approximately A$11 million) for Mt Lyell in 2026, part of a broader $340-million plan to restart the historic site near Queenstown. First ore is targeted for 2029. Once fully operational, the project is forecast to produce an average of 26,000 tonnes of copper, 16,000 ounces of gold, and 116,000 ounces of silver per year.
