EGA restores 18% of Al Taweelah ahead of 2027 recovery

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced that its Al Taweelah smelter is currently operating at roughly 18% of its nominal capacity, with full hot metal production expected to resume by the first quarter of 2027. The 1.5-million-tonne-per-year facility was forced into an emergency shutdown following an attack on the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi on March 28. Since then, EGA has successfully restarted 227 of the smelter's 1,262 reduction cells, with the first cell returning to service on May 26. Recovery efforts are also underway at the site's alumina refinery and recycling operations. The refinery resumed production in early July and quickly reached 50% of its pre-incident output within days, while the recycling plant continues to ramp up toward full capacity later in 2026.
