China Nerin signs contract with BHP's subsidiary for smelter and refinery expansion
China Nerin Engineering Co., Ltd. has signed a framework agreement for design and equipment supply with BHP Olympic Dam Corporation Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of BHP, for the expansion of the Olympic Dam smelter and refinery in South Australia. The contract is valued at approximately AUD240 million, equivalent to roughly RMB1.123 billion.
The expansion project is designed to support BHP's strategic plan to increase copper production capacity in South Australia, enhance the processing scale of the Olympic Dam copper smelting and refining operations, and enable efficient integrated processing of diverse ore types within the region. China Nerin will provide design services and equipment supply for the project.
The contract was signed in June 2026, with the effective date yet to be determined. Completion is tentatively scheduled for early 2032, and the contract is set to terminate in early 2034.
Olympic Dam Corporation Pty Ltd is responsible for operating the Olympic Dam mine and smelting facilities located in northern South Australia. Its core business encompasses the mining and processing of polymetallic ores, with copper as its primary product, alongside by-products including uranium, gold, and silver.
