MRN secures license to extend bauxite mining operations in Brazil until 2041

Mineracao Rio do Norte (MRN), Brazil's largest bauxite producer, has received an installation license from IBAMA, the country's environmental regulatory agency, for its Novas Minas project.

The permit allows the joint venture-backed by Rio Tinto, Glencore, and South32-to develop five new mining sites in the state of Para. The approval secures the company's operational future through 2041, preserving its long-standing presence in Porto Trombetas.

MRN plans to invest approximately R$9 billion between 2027 and 2041 to develop the project. The investment is aimed at maintaining a steady annual output of 12.5 million tons of bauxite to help meet global demand for aluminum feedstock. This development marks the conclusion of a licensing process that began in 2018, ensuring a stable supply from one of the world's key mining regions.
