Century Aluminum Restarts Two-Thirds of Its Iceland Smelter Ahead of Schedule

Amid growing fears of a global aluminum shortage, Nasdaq-listed Century Aluminum has announced the restart of production in the second potline of its Noreurál smelter in Iceland - several months earlier than originally planned.

Employees have energized the first pots in the second potline and will continue restarting the remaining pots on an accelerated schedule, aiming to reach near-full production by the end of July.

The second potline accounts for approximately two-thirds of the plant's total capacity.

The restart follows repair work carried out by specialists, in collaboration with the equipment's designers and manufacturer, after an unexpected transformer failure. Permanent replacement transformers have been ordered and are expected to be installed upon their delivery this fall.
