China's Qingdao Port launches second 400k-ton ore terminal

On October 27, Shandong Port Group's Qingdao Port put its second 400,000-ton ore terminal into operation, becoming the first port in northern China with dual 400,000-ton ore terminals and the first nationwide to operate a smart dry bulk terminal of this scale. On the same day, a 300,000-ton vessel carrying iron ore from Vale, Brazil began its first unloading operation at the Dongjiakou port area.

With construction started in December 2022, and the new terminal adds 16 million tonnes of annual throughput capacity and 10 million tonnes of storage capacity, bringing Qingdao Port's total ore handling capacity to over 56 million tonnes per year. The project will enhance China's iron ore logistics efficiency and support national resource and energy security.

Since 2015, the first 400,000-ton terminal at Dongjiakou has received over 460 large vessels and handled 160 million tonnes of cargo. The two terminals together will strengthen Qingdao Port's role as China's largest "ore supermarket" and promote the modernization of the country's port industry.
