China's wind and solar capacity surpasses coal for first time

As of April 2025, China's installed wind and solar power capacity reached 1.53 billion kilowatts, surpassing coal-fired power for the first time in history, according to the National Energy Administration. The country's total installed renewable energy capacity rose to 2.02 billion kilowatts, up by 58% year-on-year. Wind and solar are expected to continue outpacing coal as China's energy transition accelerates.

In 2024, China added 373 million kilowatts of new renewable capacity, accounting for around 86% of all new power generation capacity. Renewable energy additions have exceeded 300 million kilowatts for two consecutive years, representing over half of global growth.
