Nearly 4.9 billion tonnes of dolomite resources discovered in Turpan, Xinjiang

As part of a new round of mineral exploration efforts, Turpan City in Xinjiang has achieved major breakthroughs in key mineral types and strategic regions. Notably, two significant dolomite deposits have been identified, 3.653 billion tonnes in Keziltag, Toksun County, and 1.235 billion tonnes in Jianxi No. 1, Shanshan County. Both meet the general industrial-grade standards for magnesium smelting, providing a vital raw material foundation for the development of Turpan's magnesium-based new materials industry.

In 2024, Turpan released 31 mining rights for public transfer, generating a record-high RMB239.6 million (USD33.19 million) in revenue, with successful bids totaling RMB117 million (USD16.21 million). A total of 63 exploration projects were launched with RMB376 million (USD52.09 million) in investment, resulting in 17 newly identified mineral deposits, including 520 million tonnes of coal, 140 million tonnes of limestone, 105 million tonnes of dolomite, and 125,000 tonnes of zinc and lead metals.

Leveraging abundant dolomite and limestone resources, the city is planning to build a magnesium-based new materials industrial park, which is expected to attract over RMB5.5 billion (USD762 million) in social investment.
