Sumitomo Metal Mining to start mass production of silicon carbide power-semiconductor wafers

Japan-based Sumitomo Metal Mining announced recently that it will start mass production of wafers used in new-generation power-semiconductor area. The demand for new-generation power-semiconductor from pure electric vehicle sector and other sectors is likely to increase. Using silicon carbide as raw material, the new-generation power-semiconductor can notably reduce power consumption compared with ordinary silicon based semiconductor. It's expected that monthly output of 10,000 wafers would be realized in 2025. Sumitomo Metal Mining strives to first use the new wafers in home appliances and others, expecting to achieve the application in electric vehicles after 2025.
