China to adjust customs tariffs for some products starting Jan 1

China will adjust MFN tariff rate, conventional tariff rate and provisional tariff rate of some products in 2021, according to a notice issued by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council.

The notice said that China will implement provisional tariff rate, which is lower than MFN rate, for 883 products starting on January 1, 2020, so as to take advantage of both international market and domestic market, further improve supply and promote the virtuous cycle of national economy.

In addition, the country will also properly adjust provisional import tariff rate implemented in 2020 according to domestic industry development and changes in supply and demand. For the full implementation of law on the prevention and control of environmental pollution by solid waste, China will no longer apply the provisional tariff rate but the MFN tariff rate for imported solid wastes including scrap metals starting on January 1, 2021.

To advance the high-quality development of Belt and Road initiative and realize "bringing in" and "going global", and based on the free trade agreements or preferential trade arrangements concluded and came into force between China and relevant countries or regions, in 2021 China will implement conventional tariff for some products originated in countries or regions under the above-mentioned agreements.
