Russian Mechel's production and sales rebound in Jan-Sep

Mechel, Russia's fifth largest steel company, announced on Monday its production and sales results for the third quarter and the first nine months of this year.

In the third quarter of this year, the company produced a total of 852,000 tons of crude steel, a decrease of 8% from the second quarter.

In addition, pig iron output in the third quarter decreased by 5% from the previous quarter to 862,000 tons due to equipment maintenance at the metallurgical plant in Chelyabinsk.

In the first nine months of this year, the company's crude steel output was 2.65 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3%; pig iron output increased by 5% YOY to 2.65 million tons.

In the third quarter of this year, the sales of iron ore concentrate increased by 29% from the previous quarter to 606,000 tons. In the first nine months of this year, iron ore concentrate's sales totaled 1.65 million tons, down by 14% compared to the corresponding period last year.

In the first nine months of 2020, Mechel's total sales of long steel products increased by 3% year-on-year to 1.94 million tons, and sales of flat steel products totaled 342,000 tons, an increase of 1% over the same period last year. However, sales of flat steel products in the third quarter were stable from the previous quarter.
